Robotnik is eventually defeated in the climax of the movie because that's what happens to the villain when he appears in a Sonic the Hedgehog story. This was also the name of Robotnik's robot horde in other media, although they were colorful robots instead of white orbs. Even though Robotnik doesn't call them that, his circuit breaker seems to suggest that they're actually referred to as Badniks. But there are small references to the original video game version of the character, including his eventual name change to "Eggman." Many of Robotnik's drones are large white orbs, leading Sonic to make jokes about how the scientist is an "Eggman". He's also very skinny, with a thin mustache and sleek hair whereas the original Robotnik was portly, bald and had a massive but frayed mustache.

Jim Carrey's version of the character is more sarcastic and openly taunting. Initially, Doctor Robotnik doesn't appear to be all too visually similar to his video game equivalent.
